One Step Ahead
What are age appropriate Language (spoken and signed) and Literacy milestones?
Think about it
How do I know if my deaf or hard of hearing child is understanding, reading, signing, or talking at the appropriate age or grade level?
Where can I find more information on my child’s language and reading level?
You are the parent and the teacher
You spend more time than anyone else with your baby. Teach her through your loving signs/words about the word around her by using language that is just above her language level.
Here is what you can do
Use language that is 6 months to one year above where your child is communicating.
Check out Atlanta Area School for the Deaf’s Accessible Materials Project (AMP) for lots of sign language videos.
- Check out the Georgia Early Learning and Development Standards (GELDS) or the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for age appropriate Language and Literacy milestones.
- If your child is not learning and communicating at the same rate as other children, contact Babies Can’t Wait, Ga. PINES, your local school system for children over 3 years old, or Georgia Mobile Audiology for resources.
