Your baby failed the newborn hearing screening. What next? Let us walk you through the next steps.

Step 1: Let’s figure out what type of hearing test your baby needs. Answer the questions below to find out.

  • Did your baby fail the newborn hearing screening at the hospital and again after leaving the hospital?

  • Did your baby spend more than 5 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)?

  • Do you have a strong family history of hearing loss (i.e. siblings, parents)

  • Does your child have a diagnosed medical condition you’ve been told could cause hearing loss?

-If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, your baby should be scheduled for a diagnostic Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) test

-If you answered “no” to all of these questions, your baby should be scheduled for a newborn hearing screening

Step 2: Let’s get your baby scheduled. The sooner the better!

  • Find a provider that works for you by looking at the map below, call, and use the script:

    • “I need to schedule my baby for a ‘diagnostic ABR’ -or- ‘newborn hearing screening’” (see your results from above)

    • NOTE: they might ask for a referral/or a script from your baby’s doctor
