Get Connected!
We are hard wired to connect with others through language, emotions, and shared experiences.
Think about it
How can we make sure deaf or hard of hearing children are always included in family life?
we are linked together
Being connected to other families and d/Deaf and hard of hearing people can support your child's language development and emotional growth.
Here is what you can do
Tell your child about daily routines and family events. Don't assume they know the daily schedule especially if there is a change from what typically happens. Explain to your child, "You will not ride the bus to school today, because you have a dentist appointment this morning."
Let you child know where they are going. For example: "First we are going to eat breakfast. Then, we are going to the zoo."
Tell your child if the topic changes, and let them know who is talking/signing. Deaf or hard of hearing children can miss information when people are talking/signing at the same time. It is important to fill in what your child could be missing with their eyes or ears.
Give your child explanations about disruptions and interruptions during a conversation. You could explain, "I looked away because Daddy asked me a question from the other room."
It is important to get connected to other families who have deaf or hard of hearing children. These may be families in your area, on social media, or through parent groups like the Georgia Chapter of hands and Voices - Guide by Your Side or Parent 2 Parent Georgia.
- Another important connection is the Deaf Community. The Deaf Community includes diverse people who use different languages (American Sign Language, Spoken English or other spoken languages). Deaf and hard of hearing community members can share their personal experiences and can model Deaf culture. Families can participate in local Deaf Community events and activities which help children develop their Deaf identify. Check out the Georgia Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing for the latest Deaf Community events.
- If your child is not learning and communicating at the same rate as other children, contact Babies Can’t Wait, Ga. PINES, your local school system for children over 3 years old, or Georgia Mobile Audiology for resources.
